I'm Rae.1 I've lived in six states. I'm originally from Austin, and for most of my life I had the moving itch, every couple of years it was "okay, where next?" Then I landed in Los Angeles. Koreatown, specifically. And for the first time, I stopped thinking about where to go next. Even my daughter hasn't asked when we're moving again. That's how I know this one stuck.
I work as a shift supervisor at a retail shop. Outside of work, we're big movie people, premieres, anniversary screenings, random Q&As, all of it. We recently caught Frankenstein in a limited theater release, and before that a 35th anniversary screening of Cry-Baby. Honestly, that's one of the great things about L.A., you can just do stuff like that.
In June 2024, I was diagnosed with stage three triple negative breast cancer. When a diagnosis is that big, it changes what you actually get to control in your life. Your body starts deciding things without consulting you. Your calendar fills up with appointments and waiting, waiting for results, waiting to feel like yourself again.
I started chemo in August 2024. Lost my hair, my eyebrows, my eyelashes. Finished treatment in June 2025. I kept working through all of it because the routine helped, being at work reminded me I was still me.
If there's one thing I walked away from that year really understanding, it's how much autonomy matters. When so much of your life is scheduled and clinical and out of your hands, the little pockets where you still get to choose start to feel a lot bigger.
